Especially for folks working with secondary students, I also found this book helpful and very compatible with the Foundation's Shared Inquiry method: Reading for Understanding: A Guide to Improving Reading in Middle and High School Classrooms
By: Ruth Schoenbach, Cynthia L. I will check it out.

I too believe that it is more learning the social practices of literate folks rather than the mastery of skills. In fact I think out if more of strategy exchange rather than strategy instruction. A book you may enjoy is Vygotskian Perspectives on Literacy Research.jgmac1106https://www.blogger.com/profile/07793926292155541089noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7534747780673283753.post-3012197879046942982012-02-14T13:21:22.706-05:002012-02-14T13:21:22.706-05:00Helping students learn to use digital tools is a g...Helping students learn to use digital tools is a great way to incorporate real-world, lifelong learning into literacy lessons in every discipline. I am also a big advocate of using the gradual release of responsibility model as a way to think about the roles of teachers and students in reading complex texts. However, I think the focus in reading those texts should still be as much, if not more, on helping to develop students' skills and habits of mind, as on the "content" or mastery of the text. It's a balancing act, for sure, but with strategies like those included in the Shared Inquiry method from Great Books Foundation, I've seen many classes handle much more complex texts than anyone expected!Denisehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07951361639940323813noreply@blogger.com
